Melbourne’s Waking Up to Mexican Desayuno

As Reported by Broadsheet Melbourne

It’s official – desayuno (breakfast) is getting the love it deserves in Melbourne. As Broadsheet Melbourne puts it, Mexican breakfast is “finally – really, actually, seriously – getting its time in the sun.” & we couldn’t agree more.

At La Tortillería, we’ve been serving up traditional Mexican breakfasts – huevos rancheros, chilaquiles &  tacos made for the morning – for a few years now. What started as a taste of home for the local Mexican community is now winning hearts across the city.

Our founder, Gerardo Lopez, shared some of this journey in Broadsheet’s article, explaining how Melbourne’s strong brunch culture initially made it tough for breakfast to break through. But with a focus on authenticity – not competition – the tide has turned.

“Mexican breakfast works here when it’s traditional,” Gerardo says. “It’s not about replacing smashed avo – it’s about offering something different.”

From our eatery in Kensington to cafés across the city serving our tortillas, Mexican breakfast is no longer just a delicious secret – it’s a full-on mañana movement.

¡Que Rico!
